United Brethren is currently on blog sabbatical.

It's official: Sunday School is being scrapped

Several weeks back I received an email from a Church lawyer asking me to discontinue the name "United Brethren" for this blog. Now I know why....

I have it on good authority that the death of Sunday School will be announced in General Conference. Evidently the Brethren want to make the Sunday block a more family-friendly two hours rather than three and Sunday School is the casualty. This will also mean the death of "United Brethren". Why? Because of the name of the proposed replacement for Sunday School:

Concerned that the Latter-day Saints still receive some form of Gospel instruction, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve have been working with Steve Evans to create a new mega-blog, called The Brethren. All members will be encouraged to read and comment. A Spanish version is also in the works. To save tithing funds it will be hosted by Blogger.

Anyway, "United Brethren" sounds too much like "The Brethren" so I have been asked to cease and desist. I'm now taking suggestions for new blog names. Thank-you.

Niiiice. There have been rumors swirling about some big announcement this week. I have suspect a reduction to a 2 1/2 hour Sunday meeting block. My stake here in AZ has been on that schedule for more than a year now and it works out just fine. I won't be surprised if the whole world gets to follow our lead.

Ha ha very funny. You're lucky your readers have a sense of humour! I for one would LOVE this to be true, but good April fool!

I think that's a terrible move. I wish church was longer--much longer. I think we should scrap the whole three-hour block thing as a terrible idea and go back to the all-day meeting schedule.

You need to change the time zone on your Blogger account. It still shows the post as being made in March.

If it is true, I would be very happy indeed.

Sunday School is pointless in my opinion.

I must be getting old. I recognised this April Fool's Joke within 2 seconds. It used to take me longer :)

Kim: how embarrassing. A non-April Fool's April Fool is terrible bad luck.

Mary: ahem, well, I didn't think anyone would believe it for a moment.

Ronan, The Brethren are not pleased when people jump the gun. Your calling and election are most unsure.

The funny thing is, rumors HAVE been swirling for the last month or so online in MSN chatrooms (the authoritative source for news, I know...) about them changing things to cutting back... only the version I heard was alternating priesthood and sunday school.

Can you imagine a churchwide blog? it gets messy enough in here....

If first impressions count for anything, when I first saw the title "United Brethren" it made me wonder if it was an obscure apostate offshoot from the Church...

It seems to me that there are rumors every six months, but they never amount to much of anything.

Oh yeah, and this really is my fondest wish! If only I ran things . . . sigh.

an obscure apostate offshoot from the Church...

Thanks, we try our hardest. As for new names, how about "The Nicholas Breakspear Project"?

I just found this blog, so I might be a little behind the times. And I am not sure why you choose United Brethern for a title, BUT about 6 generations behind me, there were many who left United Brethren Church in England in about 1840 to become Mormon. Many came to American, and made the wagon trip west. More info: http://1womensjourney.blogspot.com/2005/03/passage_111201250740137160.html

Rachel, the picture on the header is of the Gadfield Elm chapel, the United Brethren church in England (10 miles from where I grew up). I would love to discuss this further as the United Brethren are a hobby of mine.
