No Bishop, pleeeeaaasse!
| Is there a calling that you would rather pay double tithing to avoid? Not to tempt fate, but here are mine: 1. Early morning Seminary teacher. Two reasons: One, like everyone in my family I have a genetic handicap that prevents me from rising cheerfully before 8 am. Two, trying to motivate half-asleep kids would be just awful. 2. Ward Activities Chair. I hate Ward activities. HATE, HATE, HATE. So for me to organise them would be the stuff of Dantean horror. |

post a commentHilarious, Ronan. I didn't even have to tempt fate and one of those bombs dropped on me--I was called to be the ward activities chair two weeks ago.
I will have the last laugh, however. For example, some of the ward activities that I am already working on are
(1) a hunger banquet in conjunction with the neighborhood Presbyterian Church;
(2) sub-for-santa;
and (3) numerous other ideas that I think will be different and insightful for the ward members.
When I told the bishop that I wanted to do a hunger banquet for the ward Christmas party instead of the more traditional type of ward Christmans party, he wasn't all that amenable to the idea. But he was enthusiastic to do a hunger banquet itself, just not as a ward Christmas party. I see his point. After all, if some of the senior citizens drew a third-world lot in the hunger banquet and had to sit on the floor eating white rice, it would have been very difficult for them and not enjoyable at all. And if we broke the rules for them and let them sit at the table in spite of drawing the third-world straw, then that would ruin the hunger banquet. So we will do the hunger banquet as a separate activity geared more towards the younger and middle-aged members of the ward.

I'm afraid I wouldn't have your imagination probably because I know that Mormons are a conservative bunch and if you provide an activity that's a little different they freak-out a little. I'm so glad you're thinking creatively. Good luck!
I agree with both of those, but there are many callings I wouldn't wish for. There are some I've never even heard of - like my current one - "enrichment children's class leader". I basically run the nursery for home-making. I don't mind it though. It's not that hard. I admire your get-stuck-in attitude though John with activities. I hope your ward isn't like my husband who will get out of them at all costs!!! (except when he performed a Shakespeare recital at the last ward talent night - but that's a whole other story!!)
Nursery, plain and simple. I do it all day. I don't like it. I don't want to do it on Sunday too.
