I read with great interest the letter sent by Iran's President to President Bush this week -- and, despite myself, liked much of it. Unfortunately, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reveals his true colors in a predictable non sequitur at the end of the letter. Ahmadinejad closes an otherwise relatively sensible letter with the following statement that by no means follows from the foregoing content of the letter: Liberalism and Western style democracy have not been able to help realize the ideals of humanity. Today these two concepts have failed. Those with insight can already hear the sounds of the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the liberal democratic systems. So much for sensible dialogue from Iran. |
