The Real Target?

Remember how in the summer we went to Orange Alert because of an alleged al-Qaeda plot against US financial institutions? Remember also how the information was dismissed as being several years old? Newsweek reports that in fact London was the real target. According to a U.S. government official, fears of terror attacks have prompted FBI agents based in the U.S. Embassy in London to avoid traveling on the Tube.

Some Dems have cried foul, suggesting the timing of the Aug 1 announcement was intended to crimp Kerry's post-convention bounce. Admittedly, Ridge's statement then that the "intelligence" was a "result of the president's leadership in the war against terror," does sound awfully partisan. But what is more worrying for me as a Briton is that by going public Ridge seriously hampered the effectiveness of intelligence-gathering investigations in Pakistan and the UK. I am convinced that an attack on the UK is inevitable. Please don't play politics with our security.
