"I am 12 years old and I memorize the Koran"

If you want to know what is wrong with the Arab world, if you wonder if a rational peace process can really progress, if you question whether Palestinian/Arab perennial indignation are more the effects of political marginalization or of the religious cancer that has now eaten into the vital organs of the Arab political anatomy, go have a look at some of these videos and transcripts:

http://www.memri.org/video/

Here you will see evidence of a culture (both religious and political) that is anti-rational, that does nothing to teach, encourage or safeguard any standard of detached analytical thought. You will see:
  • A Syrian Ramadan TV special (like a Christmas special but w/o Jimmy Stewart!) in which we see Jews doing what, you know, Jews do--murdering gentile boys to get blood for the matzoh, pouring molten lead into the open mouth of a non-Jewish man, the usual.
  • How to use your rod to instruct and discipline your wife (like Oprah, but with a big wooden stick!) and careful instruction on how you should not (you brute!) beat her around the face if, in fact, she must be beaten (which will probably be necessary at some point).
  • Discussion from the former head of the Palestinian Liberation Army (appointed under the more, ahem, moderate previous regime) on how Jews believe that all non-Jews were made from horse sperm, and how he would know.... he read it himself in the Talmud!
  • A Palestinian father explaining how he was delighted to give up his four oldest sons as suicide bombers and can hardly wait for his twelve-year old to get his own license to explode himself and some civilian Jews.
People, we are not dealing with mere political alienation. We are dealing with a religious culture that has merged into Arab nationalism to make a toxic compound that is primarily religious (and racist).

And the frightening thing in all of this is that it does not require a distortion or corruption of the Koran for them to get where they are.
"Fight those from among the people of the Book, who believe not in ALLAH, nor in the Last Day, nor hold as unlawful what ALLAH and HIS Messenger have declared to be unlawful, nor follow the true religion, until they pay the tax considering it a favour and acknowledge their subjection."
That message--unremitting warfare against those outside of Dar al Islam--is written all over the Koran. I've read two copies under the tutelage of two dear Persian friends who were trying to show me the good side of the Koran, this message or some variation of it is written on every indignant, spazzed out, humourless page.

And what we see right now--burning down embassies over a cartoon in an obscure newspaper--is only one manifestation of this. (BTW, I am with Mark Steyn in wondering--where does one find a Danish flag on a Thursday afternoon in Damascus? Are there Muslim flag stores carrying all varieties of infidel paraphanalia on the assumption that at some point there will be demand for burning parties?).
